Time “XII”

A new project implemented by Sergey Milchenko, one of Russia’s best sculptors, has a very meaningful name of “XII”.  The project represents two acts in the universal human drama – the Last Supper and the contemporary scene that includes the clearly recognizable figure of Jesus Christ and the figures of twelve persons (equal to the number of apostles in the New Testament).  However artistically perfect Sergey’s work may be, one cannot but recall those still tragically significant words of Vasily Rozanov who wrote:  “Indeed, there are times and goals that are incompatible with aesthetics; there are categories of good and evil that are incompatible with other categories...».

And indeed, there is a limit in the sphere of art that cannot be measured against any aesthetic pattern.  Generally speaking, Sergey Milchenko’s creative work has one indicative and unsparing volitional feature:  those who look at his works are not only their viewers or consumers, but the participants and witnesses of the depicted events.  Those events are shown with such degree of verisimilitude as if they are taking place here and now, and they have an infinite duration in time when taken out of the eternity.  You can even sometimes have a feeling that the characters created by Sergey are looking at you, appraising your place in history, in the world's fate and in the inseparable chain of consecutive generations...

In “XII” the Last Supper is a glorious and splendorous multi-figure sculptural composition that depicts the climax of human history – anticipation of the betrayal of Judas.  The diversity of the ideally sculptured central figures of the Holy Scripture, i.e. the Master and the twelve apostles, each with his own impressive gesture, bend of the head, dramatic role; each having an inimitable individuality in spite of the similarities in the poor clothes.  When you look at these faces, let alone the lowly and relaxed face of the Savior, you want to examine them thoroughly, read them like a book in an attempt to unravel the mystery in the drama of the forthcoming betrayal and the sufferings of the Son of God at Golgotha which is being experienced by them.  You can easily identify Judas the God-seller by his unmasked and frightened face.  But the most important aspect of the work is the fact that this is the last time they are together.  This is where the intersection of History starts, this is where each of us is given a choice – be with or without Christ, embark on either the way to the betrayal for thirty pieces of silver or the Cross and the Salvation.

If we adopt the motion picture editing terminology, we could say that Sergey Milchenko avoids any joints in jumping over the 2,000-year period from the Last Supper to the new “Twelve” which are essentially supertemporal and supranational.  Only the appearance, the entourage and the new stage set in which the figures in the second section of the statuary are placed seem to connect them with the modern times.  But there is something that determines their appurtenance to the present day:  their total anonymity.  This is the apotheosis, the point of no return for the humanity which has chosen its Godless path, the path to the loss of one’s own image, as well as the image of and the similarity to God.

This part of the composition shows twelve individuals in different clothes (unlike the apostles) but each with a mannequin face passing indifferently by Jesus Christ who is walking past them as bequeathed “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).  But those twelve move in the opposite direction away from the Savior toward calamity.  One cannot be more precise and relentless in depicting these “last people in the end of time”...

Fedor Tutchev, a genius of Russian poetry and philosophy:  “We should determine the hour of the day we are living through in the Christianity...”.  Sergey Milchenko’s stunningly topical and philosophically profound work named “XII” undoubtedly proves that every artist comes to this world to make people aware of this hour.  However frightening this point in time may seem, if there is an artist who warns us of the danger, we can say that there are still grounds for hope...
